Understanding Diabetes Mellitus and its Treatment

Diabetes mellitus known commonly as “Diabetes” and also “sugar”  is a disease which includes a group of metabolic disorders that feature increase in blood sugar levels, hyperglycaemia.

Diabetes is caused due to the factors which contribute to hyperglycemia , factors are ;

1)      Reduced insulin secretion
2)      Decreased glucose utilization
3)      Increased glucose production

Reduced Insulin Secretion : Insulin is secreted by the pancreas which is both an exocrine and endocrine gland located in the abdomen.  The function of Insulin facilitates the body to utilise glucose for metabolic activities and growth. Any metabolic disorder which causes reduced insulin secretion leads to hyperglycemia condition as the glucose is left unutilised by the body.

Decreased glucose utilization : This factor is self-explanatory. Whenever the glucose in the body is not utilised, it leads to hyperglycemia. This could be due to either reduced insulin secretion and release or due to  faulty lifestyle activities such as sedentary life, obesity, lack of physical exercise, improper diet etc.

Increased glucose production :  Sometimes, glucose is produced within the body by the breakdown of glycogen by the process of glycogenolysis, which is stored in certain organs. And way which causes increase in glucose production is by the gluconeogenesis, conversion of non-carbohydrates such as fatty acids and proteins into glucose.

Diabetes is a disease which includes a group of metabolic disorders. It is not a single disease or a syndrome but a group of disorders which cause increase in blood sugar levels. Therefore, it should be understood that in a patient with diabetes, not one system of the body is affected but there different reasons for hyperglycemia which need to be attended. This clearly implies, constitutional treatment is the way to treat diabetes which includes all the characters of the patient , from physical appearance to medical history, from hereditary factors to the lifestyle modifications, from mind to body.

Homeopathy is a system of medicine which has remedies for diabetes treatment with proven efficacy on human beings. A homeopathic doctor follows constitutional mode of treatment in their profession which enables recovery of health in patients with diabetes. Dermatitis and Eczema

Dermatitis and Eczema are being used synonymously by the physicians. Therefore, they are ascertained together..

Dermatitis is a non-contagious skin disease. The skin cells inflammation in Dermatitis is known by the presence of redness of the skin with scaling and swelling. There is vesiculation and oozing of discharge as well.

Dermatitis as such means inflammation of the skin of all kinds except by specific infections.

Eczema on the other hand is an outcome of antigen-antibody reaction which leads to inflammation of the superficial layer of skin , epidermis with vesicle formation.

Causative factors : 1)  Allergy 2) Exposure to chemical irritants  3) familial tendency 4) Age of the individual .

More than the causative factors, there are certain triggering factors or agents which are responsible for the eczema and dermatitis.

The triggering factors for eczema are : chemical irritants, exposure to plants, clothing, cosmetics, drugs or medicines, certain diet/food items, etc.

Eczema also develops in people who are suffering from xeroderma or ichthyosis, greasy skin, excessive sweating, varicose veins and chilblains.

The journey of eczema can be classified into three stages. Acute Eczema, Sub-acute Eczema and Chronic Eczema

Acute stage of eczema starts with redness of the skin and itching. It is followed by sub-acute stage with the appearance of swelling and papules . These stages dont last long and the lesions disappear. But if the cause for eczema persists, it lasts over months or years and thus becomes chronic eczema. Finally the skin becomes thickened, pigmented with prominent criss-cross markings.

Different types of Dermatitis and Eczema : Some of the common types of dermatitis and eczema are listed here

  • Photodermatitis
  • Contact dermatitis
  • Infantile eczema
  • Atopic dermatitis
  • Neurodermatitis
  • Seborrhoeic dermatitis
  • Discoid eczema

What is status eczematicus ?
When the skin of an Eczema patient becomes sensitive and it reacts unfavourably to the local applications or ointments, it is called “status eczematicus.”

Is eczema curable ?
The acute and subacute stages of eczema do not last long and gets healed. But the chronic stage of eczema requires good homeopathic treatment for complete cure and to stop return of eczema.

How do i prevent eczema?
Eczema can be prevented from long suffering by being alert from triggering factors which lead to eczema bloom such as chemical irritants, certain drugs and medicines, allergens such as plants, animals, clothing and cosmetics.

Is eczema contagious ?
Eczema or dermatitis as such are not contagious. But in some chronic eczematous patients who are vulnerable to infections can become source of spread of infection but not eczema. So as to say, eczema is not contagious because eczema is an outcome of antigen-antibody reaction due from allergy in people with sensitive skin.

At Positive Homeopathy Clinics, the doctors are well experienced to diagnose eczema and dermatitis from other similar skin diseases which is vital in the selection of homeopathic medicines. The doctors then carefully select the most important and also most common features in the patient in relation to the disease symptoms as well as with regards to personality of the patient which is unique from others. Such a method of practising is known as constitutional treatment which is the core of homeopathy responsible for permanent cure in almost all the diseases. It is ensured by the doctors themselves that medicines selected are then dispensed appropriately so that eczema and dermatitis can be cured. All these guidelines are followed in all the Positive Homeopathy Clinics which has earned itself as one of the best homeopathic clinics in the treatment of eczema and dermatitis.

B-Tonsillitis

Tonsillitis

Tonsillitis refers to inflammation of the tonsils, two oval-shaped tissue pads located at the back of the throat bilaterally (one tonsil on each side). Tonsillitis can affect people of any age. But it mostly affects the children of the age group between pre-school and teenage children.  It usually subsides by itself after a few days.

Occasionally adenoids are also swollen along with the tonsils. Mostly viruses cause tonsillitis but bacterial infections like strep throat too can cause tonsillitis

Signs and Symptoms

  • Severe sore throat
  • Swollen and red tonsils
  • Difficulty in swallowing
  • White or yellow coating on the tonsils
  • Swelling of glands in the neck
  • Fever
  • Bad breath

There was a time when it was fashionable to go in for tonsillectomy (removal of the tonsils) and the kids too probably just loved it for the lure of ice-cream as it was a common practice to advise patients to eat ice-cream after tonsillectomy. But later doctors realized that tonsils were helpful in maintaining the body’s immunity and the unnecessary removal stopped to a great extent. Now-a-days tonsillectomy is resorted to usually when there is frequent bacterial tonsillitis, is unresponsive to other treatments or when serious complications arise. Surgery for any disease as a rule should generally be resorted to a last resort only in emergencies or life-threatening conditions. The human body is an amazing creation and has an innate ability to heal in most of the cases or it requires very minimal doses of medicine to stimulate the body and help in recovery from any disease. This is precisely what Homeopathy does.

The Homeopathic approach to any disease consists in the treatment of the symptoms and strengthening the immune system by using medicines in ‘nano’doses. There are no specifics for any disease in Homeopathy as permanent and long-lasting treatment is possible only through the constitutional approach. The constitutional diagnosis is arrived at by a thorough case-taking, examination, and diagnosis of the patient.

Commonly used Homeopathic medicines are Aconite, Baryta c., Belladonna, Merc. i. fl., Merc. i. r., Merc. s., Silicea. Among these, Baryta c. and Silicea are especially useful for chronic tonsillitis. 3 Along with the medicines, palliative approaches and preventive measures go a long way in the complete elimination of the problem. One of the main reasons for the prevalence of tonsillitis or many other diseases in children rather than adults can be attributed to the lack of proper bowel habits among children, hygiene, etc.. Proper elimination of stool, urine, and other discharges from the body and a clear mind and clean stomach are the secret to good health. Homeopathy with its magical ‘nano’doses helps in achieving complete health without compromising the basic immunity.

Positive Homeopathy provides affordable and proper treatment for tonsillitis and all other diseases. The approach here is clear-cut and gimmick-free. We want complete and permanent cure for any disease and we won’t rest until this is achieved in the most painless and natural manner.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

What is COPD ?

COPD, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease,  is one of the most common obstructive lung diseases, implies airflow obstruction happens when breathing-out. This leads to excessive inflation of the lungs and chest wall. COPD is a serious disease because the mechanism of airflow limitation is not fully reversible. Earlier COPD was also called as Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease.

How is COPD defined?

COPD is defined by the presence of two conditions; emphysema and chronic bronchitis.

Emphysema is related to structural changes that happen in the respiratory system characterised by destruction and enlargement of the lung alveoli. And Chronic Bronchitis is defined by the presence of chronic cough and sputum production or phlegm.

Along with emphysema and chronic bronchitis, COPD also includes small airways disease,in which there is narrowing of the small bronchioles.

What happens in COPD ?

A patient with COPD experiences airflow limitation. The small airways become narrowed due to increased in the number of cells(hyperplasia), mucus secretion & accumulation and eventual fibrosis.

The series of events which leads to emphysema can be explained in four stages:

  1. Cigarette smoking leads to inflammatory changes and also stimulation of immune cells in the terminal air spaces of the lung, the alveoli.
  2. Those inflammatory cells release protein enzymes that damage the extracellular matric of the lung.
  3. Because of the continued cigarette smoke exposure and release of protein enzmes, structural cell death occurs.
  4. Failure in the repair process of the elasticity of the lung and the wall components of the lung result in increase in air spaces which is the characteric feature of emphysema.

Who are at risk of developing COPD?

Risk factors that are attributed to COPD are cigarette smoking. The incidence of higher prevalence of COPD with increasing age is connected to the years of smoking. The higher rate of smoking among males is also linked to the higher prevalence of COPD in males when compared to females.

Other risk factors can be environmental and genetic factors which play an important role in COPD prevalence. Respiratory infections act as caustative factors for the acute increase in complaints of COPD. Occupational exposures such as cotton textile dust, coal mining, etc are the included under risk factors category for COPD.

What are the symptoms of COPD?

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is known by the presence of three symtoms:

Cough, Sputum production and Breathlessness on exertion .

With the advancement of COPD, breathlessness on exertion (exertional dyspnoea) gets worsened even at rest.

On examination, physician may find prolonged expiratory phase with some wheezing. The chest may appear barrel shaped due to hyperinflation of the lungs. In advanced stage of COPD, cyanosis(bluish discoloration) is visible in the lips and nail beds.

Who are Pink puffers?

When emphysema is predominant than Chronic bronchitis in patients with COPD, they are referred to as ‘Pink puffers.”  They appear thin and use accessory muscles of respiration such as intercostals muscles, sternocleidomastoid muscles and scalene muscles.

Who are Blue bloaters?

When a patient with COPD has Chronic bronchitis predominance over emphysema, they are called as “ Blue bloaters”.  These people appear heavy and have bluish discoloration(cyanotic).

What is the treatment for COPD?

COPD is among the top 3 diseases responsible for more number of deaths across the globe. Such a grave disease not being controlled through various medicines is  very disappointing for modern medical science. Homeopathy on the other hand is a medical science which has effective remedies for COPD which bring about drastic improvement in the symptoms of the disease.

The medicines are selected carefully by the method of constitutional treatment which includes the entire medical history, the mind and physical appearance, the therapeutic aspects etc. Since not all smokers suffer from COPD and it suggests certain constitutions being prone to such a disease. Therefore, it is observed and proved by the homeopathic doctors that best treatment for COPD is possible by the constitutional method.

Homeopathic medicines such as Hepar sulph, Lachesis, Silicea, Ammonium carb, Antimonium tart etc are especially beneficial in the treatment of patients with COPD with emphysema in predominance otherwise called as Pink puffers.

Likewise, constitutionally chosen homeopathic drugs useful in the treatment of patients with COPD with Chronic bronchitis predominance are Bryonia, Crotalus horr, Aconite, Carbo veg, Stannum, Sulphur among others.
